Insulin is produced in the pancreas.
It’s released when glucose is present in the bloodstream…
Which happens when a person eats carbohydrates or high amounts of protein. .[17] [18]
So let’s say one were to eat a carbohydrate like a banana or potato…
These foods get broken down by the digestive system and turn into glucose…
And once glucose is floating around in the bloodstream…
Insulin is released and shuttles glucose to certain cells to store it...
These cells are typically muscle cells, liver cells, and also… fat cells.
And that’s the thing…
A lot of people don’t realize that insulin has a major effect on fat cells...
Resulting in…
Even more shocking…
According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention…
More than 1 in every 3 people have higher than normal blood glucose levels.
Which could explain why nearly 66% of folks in the United States are either overweight or obese…[21]
Do you see the connection?
Great!
Now it’s important to note that insulin isn’t all bad…
It’s actually a gift from God that can help us maintain good health…
See— the reason insulin is released in the presence of glucose is so the glucose doesn’t pile up in our bloodstream...
Because too much glucose in the bloodstream is actually TOXIC.
And can cause headaches, fatigue, rapid heart beat, dizziness or a lack of focus...[22]
And eventually a host of other problems like...
Type II diabetes, kidney failure, heart attack, stroke, blindness, and nerve problems that affect just about everything in your daily life including your sexual health.[23]
So insulin is good at the appropriate time...
It acts like a God-given defense shield…
But when it comes to fat loss...
Especially losing fat in those tough areas like the gut, love handles, chest and other spots where the fat seems to stick like glue…
Insulin levels must remain as normal as possible throughout the day.
Because insulin not only forces cells to STORE fat and get bigger...
But according to the latest research from Vanderbilt University and studies published in the U.S. National Library of Health…
Insulin also MUTES the fat-burning signals of cAMP… which again, is the ancient signaling molecule. [24] [25]
To explain it another way…
When cAMP is in the presence of insulin…
The fat burning messages being sent by cAMP may not be received by the fat cells.
Because in the presence of insulin... these fat burning signals can be completely muted.
So the fat just sits in the waist, chest, or other areas on the body like a train stuck in a subway with no power.
This is why it can feel pretty impossible to get rid of all the excess body fat
Here’s the truth…
And it’s something that most fitness experts will never say…
No matter how intense the workout…
Or how much cardio one does…
Or if one eats nothing but protein and vegetables…
Or pumps iron at the gym six times a week…
The body is still going to hold onto fat and continue to store new fat if it’s not receiving these fat burning signals from cyclic AMP.
Again— this is why it’s so important to keep insulin levels as balanced as possible.
So to recap…

So now how does a person take action and put a plan into place to maintain healthy insulin levels and stay in fat burning mode instead of fat storing mode?
Well— some folks completely cut carbs out of their diet…
This is more commonly known as the “ketogenic diet” or “keto”…
And it’s basically where a person eats very high amounts of fat, a bit of protein, and almost zero carbs every single day…
Remember...
Carbs and high protein are what cause insulin levels to spike...
So not eating carbs or a lot of protein can help burn fat…
However, for guys our age…
It’s NOT the best way to lower insulin levels...
Because research published in the scientific journal, Life Sciences, shows…
Think of testosterone and cortisol like a gas and brake… [i]
Testosterone is the gas pedal and cortisol is the brake pedal...
When cortisol levels go up…
It’s like hitting the brake pedal on your testosterone...
And higher cortisol levels can lead to…
A diet containing carbohydrates can help combat cortisol... [33]
So we don’t want to exclude this food group entirely. In fact, it’s the opposite…
Now...
Additional research compared the effects of carbs on hormones along with exercise performance...
This study included men and women who exercise regularly…
And as confirmed in the previous study…
The subjects on the low carb diet experienced a decrease in testosterone and other anabolic hormones... with an increase in cortisol. [34]
And after following the low carb diet for just 3 days…
Only 33% of the participants were able to complete the researcher’s cycling test…
Meanwhile...
100% of those in the higher carbohydrate group were able to maintain optimal performance and complete the cycling test.
Another study performed at the University of North Carolina Applied Physiology Laboratory ran the same test alongside a short intense workout program...
And found those eating a low carb diet saw a 43% drop in testosterone to cortisol ratio, which is not good…[35]
While the control group that was eating more carbs...
Did not see any dip in their testosterone or any increase in cortisol.
So it’s probably clear to see why I don’t recommend the ketogenic diet to men, especially not to guys at a certain age.
Now...
It’s okay to be a little bit confused right now…
Because earlier I shared how carbs can increase insulin...
And insulin mutes cAMP signals and causes the body to hold onto fat…
Yet now I’m saying that carbs are important to maintain high and healthy testosterone levels and boost performance in the gym...
So what’s the deal?
Don’t worry…
In a minute I’ll share a...
WITHOUT the fat-storing insulin spike…
So one can shred the fat and get lean or even ripped while eating “taboo” foods they really enjoy without the consequences…
It’s like a get out of jail free card…
And I can promise it’s something most people never heard of before…
But first...
I quickly want to explain why carbs play an important role in maintaining and building muscle, especially for guys our age.
See— most personal trainers will say that all a person needs to build muscle is protein…
However, it’s just not the case...
The latest research shows low carb intake can shrink muscle mass even if protein remains constant…
To put it another way…
Even if someone is guzzling protein shakes or eating a thick cut of steak or chicken with every meal 5 times a day…
They could be losing muscle if they’re not getting enough carbs.
A recent study published from the Netherlands compared three diets…
A high carb diet, medium carb diet, and ketogenic diet…
All of the diets consumed the same amount of protein which was roughly 15%...
And the researchers found the subjects following the ketogenic diet experienced more muscle breakdown than the other two groups…[36]
Which can cause slowed muscle gains or even muscle loss.
Research from Edwina Clark RD reports…
“Small studies suggest that people on the ketogenic diet lose muscle even when they continue resistance training...
This may be related to the fact that protein alone is less effective for muscle building than protein and carbohydrates together after exercise...” [37]
Which is crucial information for guys our age…
Because according to Clark and hundreds of University-backed studies from schools like Harvard and other scientific publications...[38] [39] [40]
“Loss of muscle mass as we age has a number of serious consequences…
Muscle is metabolically active and helps boost daily energy expenditure and mitigate age-related weight gain...
Losing muscle mass can also decrease functional strength and heighten the risk of falls…”
Which are the top cause of death from injury in older populations, according to the Institute of Medicine Division of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. [41]
So maintaining as much muscle as possible…
And continuing to build new muscle and strength is critical for us men to be the rock our family needs in our body and health.
Plus...
This happens to a lot of guys…
They cut out carbs...
And while they may get plenty thin…
They still have some “extra” around the gut...
Or still feel unhappy without a shirt on even though their body mass index is in a healthy range.
Some guys drop the carbs along with a bunch of weight and just feel weak after...
Like they lost their strength and have to build from scratch like the first time they walked in the gym as a newbie.
Don’t get me wrong...
Some people are okay with this and may thrive on keto.
Some are okay with giving up carbs for the rest of their life...
And possibly risking their hard-earned strength gains and muscle mass…
And maybe even feel a fraction of the energy and libido they used to have…
No sex-drive, no energy, and without a masculine slab of muscle on your body.
Again, if that works for you, great…
But it’s something myself and my clients are not interested in...
Especially because I’m a complete foodie and enjoy social outings with friends, or church get-togethers with a lot of food, or dinners out in the company of my family without feeling handcuffed to some no carb diet all the time…
And most guys I think would say the same…
